SUMMARY:The Evolution of Writing Instruction with AI
DESCRIPTION:The Evolution of Writing Instruction with AI examines how artificial intelligence is transforming feedback\, revision\, and student autonomy in secondary English classrooms. Drawing on mixed-methods action research with six sections of 9th-grade English\, this session demonstrates how tools like Khan Academy’s Khanmigo Writing Coach expand real-time feedback loops\, strengthen higher-order thinking\, and reduce teacher workload—all while keeping educators central to the writing process. Participants will explore shifts from traditional\, teacher-directed instruction toward collaborative\, AI-supported writing ecosystems aligned with TEAL frameworks and modern literacy expectations. The session will highlight how these AI-driven approaches uniquely benefit Early College students\, who must navigate accelerated coursework\, college-level writing expectations\, and increased independence. Attendees will examine strategies for using AI tools to scaffold advanced writing tasks\, personalize feedback for diverse learners\, and cultivate academic behaviors—such as revision stamina\, metacognition\, and self-regulated learning—that support Early College success. Examples will show how AI can help bridge gaps between secondary and postsecondary writing demands\, giving students equitable access to the types of iterative feedback common in college environments. The session further outlines emerging pathways for responsible AI integration\, student digital citizenship\, and scalable district implementation. Participants will leave with research-grounded insights and adaptable strategies designed to evolve alongside rapid advances in educational AI while supporting all learners\, including those pursuing Early College opportunities.

SUMMARY:Indiana Teachers of the Year—We Can Do Hard Things: Rigor Through Relationships
DESCRIPTION:When difficulty feels isolating\, unclear\, or high-risk\, the brain protects itself. However\, when rigor is sequenced thoughtfully and grounded in trust\, students rise.\n \n This session reframes what it means to ask students to do hard things. Through concrete instructional moves\, we will explore how intentional sequencing builds trust\, creates confidence\, and develops stamina without lowering expectations. By the end of our time together\, participants will know how to help students solve challenges that may initially appear impossible using a framework for designing how they will embrace hard things and thrive.

SUMMARY:Balancing College Rigor within the High School Environment: Reflections from Early College Educators
DESCRIPTION:Early College coursework can provide students with several opportunities. However\, for many of the overachieving and perfectionist students\, it can also be a source of anxiety and stress. Many of these students are taking the same amount of college credits as a full time college student\, but without the flexibility of a college schedule. The goal of a successful Early College course is to help the students achieve both academic and personal growth. Early College educators are in a unique position to mentor these students through some of their first academic struggles and challenges. The goal of this presentation is to recognize the differences between high school and college environments and identify the impact that those differences have on the students. Reflections on strategies\, techniques\, and methods to support student well-being will be presented.

SUMMARY:Closing the Gap Starts with Communication: Keynote Breakout
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we’re focused on expanding access to Early College opportunities. But access doesn’t always break down because of a lack of programs. It often breaks down because of a lack of clarity. Mixed messages. Unclear pathways. Assumptions that others “just get it.” Yet\, the reality is that the quality of our communication shapes who opts in\, who opts out\, and who never even considers the opportunity. In this fun and engaging session\, Thomas C. Murray will help participants rethink how they communicate around all aspects of the programs they support. From communicating with students to working with families and supporting staff\, we’ll explore why gaps in communication exist and how the “curse of knowledge” quietly holds systems back. Participants will walk away with clear\, actionable strategies to simplify messaging\, strengthen alignment\, and ensure each learner and family understands the opportunities in front of them. Expect to laugh\, reflect\, and leave with ideas you can use right away. Because closing the gap doesn’t start with a new program. It starts with how we communicate the ones we already have.

SUMMARY:Ignorance Is Bliss… Until It Isn’t: Policy Won’t Save Us from AI—Defining What Counts in Early College Classrooms (2026–27 & Beyond)
DESCRIPTION:We’re still designing and assessing what students produce when we should be measuring how they think. AI has changed that. As we enter 2026–27\, AI is embedded in how students think\, write\, and complete work—while also making it easier than ever to shortcut the learning process. The question isn’t if students are using AI. Are we measuring the what … or the how? Grounded in Think It • Show It • Own It\, this session introduces a clear\, actionable framework (AI Levels: No AI → Tutor → Coach → Thinking Partner) to define responsible AI use\, protect student thinking\, and bring consistency to how we design and assess learning in Early College classrooms. Participants will leave with practical tools\, ready-to-implement systems\, and an invitation to join an ongoing cadre of educators continuing this work together. Because ignoring AI isn’t neutral—it’s a decision. And 2026–27 is the moment to define what counts.

SUMMARY:P-CAP: Re-engaging Students through Community\, Integrated Courses & Work-Based Learning
DESCRIPTION:Designed to transform the college and career pathways of Indiana’s disengaged high school students\, the Pathways to Careers and Postsecondary (P-CAP) model delivers a new framework for improving the postsecondary outcomes of students who enter high school as some of the least likely to graduate\, yet thrive when engaged in non-traditional learning and pathway experiences. Within the P-CAP strategies\, high schools design local P-CAP programs focused on building community\, providing hands-on integrated coursework\, blending career and postsecondary pathways\, and delivering high-quality work-based learning (WBL). Join this session to learn about the P-CAP model and the work of 15 P-CAP Network partner schools. Presenters will provide an overview of P-CAP strategies\, discuss the relationship between P-CAP and Early College programs\, and take a deep dive into work-based learning. As a cornerstone of the P-CAP model\, work-based learning begins in 9th grade and builds sustained relationships between students and their industry partners.

SUMMARY:Student Leadership Level Up
DESCRIPTION:After almost a decade of our Early College Academy\, we wanted to do more. We wanted\, more than anything\, for students within the academy to feel they genuinely had autonomy in the visioning and decision-making. Enter the Early College Leadership Council. In it's second year\, sophomores through seniors apply for these positions to be the face and voice of Penn's Early College\, and they've already made it better than ever before\, organizing everything from service projects to better social media presence\, to middle school meet-ups with the incoming Early College class. Here from the sponsor and select students to find out how you could do the same - and it would be more than worth it!

SUMMARY:The Lost Art of the Pen: A Notebook Protocol
DESCRIPTION:One of the emerging problems Nicolas Boyd noticed in his dual credit chemistry classroom—and really in all classes—is that students lack effective notetaking skills and structures. This session provides teachers with an organizational protocol that has increased student engagement and notetaking skills. It equips teachers with a strategy designed to help students take better notes\, process information more effectively\, and organize information to help them within the classroom. The protocol does not focus on existing notetaking strategies\, but instead restructures how students interact with content\, emphasizing handwriting and slow information processing\, while forcing students to read\, write\, and rewrite. Students are capable of taking great notes—without Powerpoint or Google Slides—they just need a little bit of direction!
